Why it matters: By leveraging your existing engineering knowledge and learning new skills, you will play a  key role in our mission. By working with senior engineers, you will design, build, and support tools, systems, and workflows that will amplify and enable the efforts of fellow engineers. You will help us optimize our stack and ultimately work toward making our systems faster, more efficient, and able to deal with massive volumes of traffic as we continue to launch worthy products into the world.

Go deeper: In this role, you will make an impact on Axios through the following responsibilities:

  • Follow standards, patterns, and best practices in order to help engineers in other squads make effective use of infrastructure

  • Work with more senior engineers to grow your skills while taking on more advanced responsibilities over time

  • Consult with other squads in a SRE capacity to help leverage infrastructure effectively

  • Configure and manage our software defined networking capabilities including VPCs, firewalls, and routing

  • Update AWS account and group policies

  • Maintain core shared services like Kubernetes clusters, databases, and CI/CD systems

  • Familiarity with security policies such as SOC 2, NIST, and CIS benchmarks is a plus

  • Assist in following and enabling incident management and release coordination processes

  • Understand the importance of creating and reviewing documentation

The details: The person in this role should have knowledge of basic concepts of DevOps engineering and be able to work collaboratively to learn, achieve goals, and grow their skills both through mentorship and through independent learning. The ability to work independently some of the time is a must, along with being comfortable asking questions.

  • Understanding of cloud engineering concepts (AWS, GCP, Azure)

  • Experience with Kubernetes is a plus

  • Understanding of CI/CD concepts (Jenkins, CircleCI, GitHub Actions, etc)

  • Familiarity with monitoring systems like Prometheus, Grafana, Loki, Sentry, etc.

  • Experience with a language like Python, JavaScript, Go, or similar

  • Experience using Terraform is a plus

  • An understanding of business continuity and disaster recovery is a plus 

  • Proactively seeking to make systems more efficient, faster and cheaper

  • Fast learner with an ability to work and learn collaboratively

  • Experience with AWS a plus
